More Exploding Batteries!

Toshiba has joined Apple, Lenevo, IBM, and Dell in recalling laptop batteries made by Sony. Toshiba has announced that it is recalling 830,000 laptop batteries, while Dell has added to its recall, upping its number to 4.2 million batteries. The total number of recalled Sony laptop batteries is now over 7 million.

The new wave of recalls by laptop manufactures was set off when a laptop caught fire at Los Angles International Airport. Sony has said that the fire can be caused by a rare short circuit within the battery.

The financial loss for Sony due to the recalls is estimated around $270 million, which accounts for a quarter of its profits so far this year.

Join the discussion, Dude, you're getting a melted Dell.

More Details of Microsoft's iPod Killer

As the release date for Microsoft’s Zune music player approaches, more details are becoming available. One such detail that has sparked the interest of hopeful users is the ability to share your music with friends wirelessly.

Microsoft has said that its Zune player, which will compete with Apple’s iPod for MP3 supremacy, will allow users to share music, playlists, and photos wirelessly with other Zune users nearby. Once you share a song with someone, they will be able to listen to that song three times over three days before they must purchase it themselves.

The price for the new device has been set at $249.99 by Microsoft. It is being manufactured by Toshiba, and will have 30 GB of memory (enough to hold roughly 7,500 songs). It will come preloaded with 25 songs as well. The device itself has a 3-inch color screen, and also has a built in FM tuner. One advantage to the Zune system is that it will allow users to purchase songs individually, as Apple does, but also allow users to listen to an unlimited number of tracks by paying a monthly subscription – the price of which has not be announced.

Discuss the Microsoft Zune -- will it really be an iPod killer?

PC Makers Making Deals

HP is making all kinds of deals this week. Hewlett-Packard has announced deals with both Yahoo! and Voodoo, helping the company’s stock raise a bit.

Yahoo! and HP have announced that new systems sold in the US and Europe will now feature a preloaded set of Yahoo! developed programs. For example, the Yahoo! toolbar will come preloaded, and Yahoo! will be the default search engine on upcoming HP models. Yahoo! hopes that this new partnership will increase its shrinking share of the search engine market now being dominated by Google.

HP has also announced that it has made a deal to purchase Voodoo PC. Voodoo, an industry leader when it comes to high-end computers, will become a center piece for HP’s new line of home computer products. HP’s Voodoo purchase comes just months after its largest rival, Dell, announced it was purchasing Voodoo rival Alienware. Both HP and Dell are hoping that their recent acquisitions will help to drawl in Voodoo and Alienware’s loyal, high-dollar paying crowd.
