Better late than never, right?
It's been very busy in my life recently. My local computer service company (CermakTech) has a brand new web site, and the Tech Support Guy servers are looking for a new home! It's a lame excuse, but least I'm staying out of trouble! I'll keep you updated on the server move as news becomes available. Thanks in advance for your patience during this huge transition.
As always, if you have any suggestions, or would like to submit an article or review, please email me at mike@techguy.org
Thanks!

All-in-One DVD Player / Projector by Glenn Cermak
For those of you who don’t know, I (TechGuy’s little brother) am a middle school teacher. And, shockingly enough, I don’t teach anything dealing with computers – quiet the opposite, I teach ancient history. The school where I am teaching is currently undergoing massive renovations, and is thus short on all things technology related for in the classroom. One thing that I wanted to use was a projector, so I could show DVDs on an overhead screen. Well, they only had two…. for 73 teachers to share. So, the Parent Teacher's Organization bought us a couple of Zoombox DVD/CD Projectors. I must say, I have been very impressed, especially for the price.
The Zoombox has a built-in DVD/CD player and stereo speakers (which are of good quality). The image can be made up to 60" diagonal, and you can have the unit up to eight feet from the screen. The room does need to be dark, but that isn't too hard (we have these things on the wall called light switches). The image, for videos, is good. Not great, not HDTV quality, but good. Text is where the problem lies. I wouldn’t use this to project anything with lots of text... so don’t watch any foreign films that have subtitles you have to read, or you'll be really lost.
The best part of the Zoombox is probably the price. The price is set at around $250 (on sale at Kmart.com until November 11 for $199.99). And, the upkeep cost is low too. While the a replacement bulb for normal, higher-end projector can set you back over $100, the bulb used by the Zoombox can be found for as little as $6. You could find that in your couch cushions... while watching a movie on the Zoombox.

TSG and Firefox, a Match Made in Heaven by Ciberblade
One of the most popular features of the Firefox web browser is the ability to add additional functions not included with the browser, such as development tools for web administrators, entertainment, searching, educational... the list goes on and on. Tech Support Guy falls under the navigation extensions and allows us to browse our favorite areas quickly and easily.
The TSG extension incorporates most every aspect of the forums in an easy to navigate form, structured on the design layout of the forum itself. It was not always as functional as it is now... I remember when it was born, how it seemed to keep going forever, and those baby steps that forced it to re-direct in circles. As it grew, I got to watch it evolve into the extension I always hoped it would be.
The extension is officially listed by Mozilla, and can be found at https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1235//

New Notebooks Lose Weight
Sony has announced that they will begin, in December, selling the lightest notebook computer ever made. No, not ‘lightest’ as in color – lightest as in it will only weight 898 grams (or 1.97lbs). The notebook release comes on the heels of roughly 9.6 million Sony batteries being recalled by such notebook conglomerates as Dell and Apple.
The new Sony Type G Vaio Notebook will be the lightest laptop PC ever sold, and comes with a 12.1-inch LCD screen. It is said to run for about 12.5 hours on one fully charged battery (hopefully these ones won’t catch on fire).
Selling price is expected to be 220,000 yen (or about $1,881 US). But, sadly, Sony says that it has no plans to sell the Type G overseas in the near future. Many experts do, however, predict that this release will spark a ‘weight’ war between the major notebook manufacturers. Maybe someone should make a “Biggest Loser” reality show for laptops.

crjdriver Moderator | My real name is Chuck and I live in the Reno, NV area. We moved here from Southern California about 7 years ago. I live with my wife, teenage son and our pet daschund Jordie. I think the dog owns the house and just allows me to stay here as long as I pay the bills. :-)
The user name is from the type of aircraft I fly; a Canadian Regional Jet. I found TSG years ago when I was trying to research a problem with windows 2000. I liked the people so I stayed. The amount of time I spend on TSG varies due to the fact that I am away from home for 3-4 days at a time. I would say approx 10-12 hr per week on an average.
In my spare time I like to hang out in the garage and work on the cars. Auto repair is one of my hobbies along with computer building. I have a 1972 Corvette that is currently being restored. One of the nice things about living here is "Hot August Nights" if you are into cars, it is great. It is an enormous classic car show and events that goes on for a week in early Aug.
As for famous last words, this is something I tell my son from time to time. "The world has two kinds of people; winners and losers. The difference is winners produce and losers alibi."
