Welcome to a new issue of TechGuy News. First, I'd like to apologize for not sending a new issue for the past few months. Part of the problem was that I was busy remodeling a building for my computer store. I'm glad to announce that the move is complete, so I should have a bit more free time!
The other problem is that I need a few volunteers to help with this newsletter! All I need is an article or two every month and it would make my life a lot easier. So, if you're willing to write an article or review every month (or even just once in a while!), please email me at mike@techguy.org
Finally, I want to mention that Dan and I are in the process of doing a lot of upgrades at TechGuy. We recently replaced our main database server with a brand new 2x quad-core Xeon server with 12GB of RAM! It's running well, and now we're starting work on a long list of software upgrades. Thanks to everyone who supports the site, and thanks for your patience during all of this work!
Have a great week,
 Mike Cermak "TechGuy" |

Lightening & Computers
As it turns out, lightening and computers just don't mix. After a recent lightening storm, we had over 30 computers dropped off at our store within two days!
From my experience, the most common culprit is not a surge in power through your electrical outlet, but instead a surge of power through the telephone line connected to your computer's modem. Speaking of which, if you're on high-speed, disconnect your dial-up modem! If you're still using dial-up, you should get a surge suppressor that includes connectors for your telephone line... and hook it up. :-)
It's a good idea to invest in a good surge suppressor, especially if you live in an area that frequently has lightening storms or other power issues. I also recommend that you invest in a UPS, or Uninterruptible Power Supply.
A UPS frequently looks like an oversized power strip, but is really battery that allows your computer to run if the power goes out. They're advertised by the number of minutes the average computer will run with no power. Most likely, your power doesn't go off very frequently, or for very long. I still believe you should have a UPS, as they'll help to filter electrical noise and help maintain consistent power to your computer, even during small "brown outs," such as when an air conditioner's compressor kicks on. As a result, you don't really need the giant 60 minute UPS. A cheaper, say 15 minute, UPS can be found at your local electronics or office superstore for less than $50. Not only will it help save your computer in case of a black out, but will also extend your computer's lifespan by giving it consistent power every day.

Nike Shoes + Apple iPod
As my shoes began to fall apart during a recent run, I decided that it was time to buy a new pair! And, what kind of shoes does a geek buy? Why, one that will connect to my iPod, of course!
Nike+ shoes have been around for a while now, but it seems a lot of people aren't really familiar with them. Here's the way it works: you buy a special pair of shoes from your local Nike store. These Nike+ shoes have a small pocket in the left shoe where you can put a wireless pedometer. The pedometer is designed to communicate with your Apple iPod Nano.
While you're running, your iPod displays how far you've gone, how long you've run, and other relevant details. At any time, you can press the center button of your iPod to hear a voice speak that same information to you while you run. It's a lot easier than trying to read a small screen while running and trying not to be run over!
Nike and Apple have taken things a step further than that. When you synchronize your iPod to your computer, it sends data from your runs to Nike's web site, where you can view your previous runs, look at graphs of your progress, set goals, and optionally share that information with other runners. You can even compete in virtual races with runners around the world. Now all we need is a TechGuy Running Team!

Cookiegal Administrator |
My name is Karen and I live in a small rural town in Quebec. I'm retired from the mainstream workforce but work part-time as a self-employed French/English translator from my home. My igloo does tend to melt a bit in the summer so I pitch a tent for a few weeks but one day, I'll have that quaint log cabin in the woods that I've always dreamed of.
Contrary to what many may think, the name Cookiegal has nothing to do with computer cookies, although it does fit well now. My paternal grandfather started calling me Cookie from the time I was an infant. Maybe he could see into the future. When I came to register at TSG, the name Cookie had already been taken so, being ever so creative, I just added gal to it. I thought it had a nice ring to it.
I joined TSG back in August 2003 because I had a virus and needed help and I was so fascinated by the clean up process that I decided to learn how to do it myself so I could give back to the community and help others. Many people helped me get started but my mentor was Flrman1 and I'm forever grateful to him for that.
I worked very hard to learn as much as I could about the various infections and to keep up to date on new variants and how to eradicate them. Then, much to my surprise, I was asked to be a moderator and eventually became an administrator, which I am honoured to do and take very seriously.
One of the highlights of being involved with TSG was actually getting to meet Mike (TechGuy) and his wife, Heather, and spending a wonderful day with them when I took a trip to Pennsylvania last year. Another highlight was getting to meet Cheeseball81, cybertech, JohnWill and Squashman from TSG, as well as some people I know from other sites, at the Microsoft MVP summit that was just held in Seattle last month.
I lost my husband to Cancer nearly 25 years ago and these days, my best friend, companion and the love of my life is my beloved little dog, Brandy, who you see in my avatar. He is so sweet, gentle and loving and just makes my days so much brighter.
