Saving for MBR For Grub Recovery
Windows Mobile 6 Internet Connection Sharing on Linux!
|
Happy Valentine's Day!
OK, maybe not yet, but very soon. It's a good time to show your computer some love. If you're using Windows XP, Microsoft has an article full of tips called "Get started with computer maintenance". It's an old one, but still a good starting point if regular computer maintenance is still a foreign idea to you.
If you're a little further head of the class and all of that looks basic, check out our articles this month on sharing your Treo's Internet connection with Linux as well as how to dual boot Linux and Windows on one machine.
Have a great month, and don't forget to buy something for that special someone.

Support.com a Review by Linuxphile
Support.com is one of our advertisers. Michael though it would be a good idea to get a feel for the level of service Support.com offers. To this end I installed a virus purposely on my laptop and called their 800 number for support.
Overall my experience with Support.com was very positive. The support technicians I dealt with were personable and knowledgeable. The issue I raised with the techs was a fairly routine issue that can get many home users: my computer was slow and I didn't know why. The techs did not treat me like an idiot or talk down to me in any manner. They used proprietary software to tune-up my machine and in a most efficient manner.
To read more about my experience check out the review on our forums.

Saving Your MBR for Grub Recover by Tom (lotuseclat79)
I run a system with Linux Fedora Core 3 (FC3) on one SATA disk with a
RHPro7.2 slaved disk, and a WinXP Pro SP2 on another SATA disk with a
Win98SE slaved disk, and I also use the Grub boot loader. I have an
NTFS driver installed on Linux in order to mount and read the WinXP Pro
SP2 disk. Recently, my WinXP Pro SP2 has had some difficulties that I
attempted to solve with an XP Reinstall which I had successfully done
before when things went south. Unfortuneately, it hangs at the Windows
Progress bar screen just before the continuation of the XP Reinstall
after reboot.
With the situation unresolved, I decided to investigate a WinXP
Parallel Install, but kicked out of it when I became uncertain of
whether certain folders in the original WinXP installation would
survive when the Parallel install is done to another folder (e.g.
C:\WinXP rather than C:\Windows) in the same partition as the faulty
one.
One curious consequence of initiating the Parallel Install before I
kicked out of it due to the uncertainties above was that it appears
that the Parallel Install Process trashed my WinXP Pro SP2 disk drive
Master Boot Record (MBR). This resulted in my Grub boot loader screen
never displaying prior to defaulting to the WinXP bootup (i.e.
grub.conf file contains: default=0 for the WinXP Reinstall), so as a
consequence I could not also bootup my Linux FC3 system.
Luckily, I had previously saved the original MBRs of both hard drives
on my Linux root account (for just such a situation) using the dd
command, and so the problem of how to get back my Linux bootup
capability presented itself. I had a Live CD boot disc CD of Ubuntu
6.0.6 which allowed me to capture the contents of both MBRs (as root
using the sudo -i command after mounting the hard drives using Ubuntu's
SysAdmin Disk Manager) and compare them with what I had saved
originally via a hex dump using xxd command. I then successfully
restored the MBR for the WinXP Pro SP2 hard drive by reversing the dd
command's input and output files. Then the Grub bootup screen to select
either Linux FC3 or WinXP Pro SP2 appeared on the next reboot of the
system - thus allowing me to use my Linux FC3 (to create this thread).

Treo 750 WM6 Internet Connection Sharing on Ubuntu by Linuxphile
Last month I wrote about the Treo 750's ability to act as an internet connection sharing device in Windows. This month I wanted to bring to the attention of our alternative operating system user's attention that the same internet connection sharing ability is available on Linux.
The steps outlined here are specific to Ubuntu, however, they should be easily applied to any other Linux distribution or variant. First, I am currently running Ubuntu 7.10 also known as Gutsy Gibbons.
There currently is no graphical or automated manner to install the necessary software. With that said we will approach the software installation and configuration from the command line.
The unfortunate part of getting this to work for end users is the need to compile the driver or software needed to interact with the internet connection sharing feature of the Treo 750. Before getting started with the installation of the driver we will need to make sure we install the neccessary tools required to compile the drive.
Install gcc, that is Gnu C Compiler, is fairly easy from the command line or terminal window. sudo apt-get install build-essential
The above command will download and install gcc, automake, autoconf, and other required software for compiling the drivers. Another tool needed, but not necessarily installed is the Subversion (svn) client. Subversion is a source repository application. We will use the svn client to download the rndis-lite, sub-project of SynCE from SourceForge. To install SVN issue the following command from a terminal window: sudo apt-get install svn
With the gcc and Subversion software installed we are now ready to begin the installation of the driver software. svn co https://synce.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/synce/trunk/usb-rndis-lite cd usb-rndis-lite/ make sudo ./clean.sh sudo make install
That is it! The software drive is installed. If you have any problems compiling the drive post a question to our Linux forums.
Now it is time to configure the device, or so I thought. I rebooted my Ubuntu installation and discovered that NetworkManager automatically detected the Treo as a wired ethernet device and immediately brought it up.
All in all, this is not too difficult, but it helps to have all of the steps laid bare. What some might find humorous, and I find quite said, is that using the Treo 750 as a modem or internet connection sharing device, I achieve the same download rate as I do with my DSL: 256kb/s. I do, however, live in the middle of no where PA.
